Andrew Marriott is a senior lecturer in the School of Computing at the Curtin University of Technology - Western Australia . His research interests include facial animation, computer animation, architectural visualisation, unnatural terrain environments and, of course, pretty pictures. In 1988 he formed the Computer Animation Negus(CAN), a research and development group at Curtin whose aim is to provide a sophisticated environment for animation work at the undergraduate, post-graduate and commercial level.

As penance, he is developing the

- a large scale Java-based graphical mentoring system.

He has been known to wear shoes. He is also forced to beat many research students to get them to work. Madness reigns.
The CAN's research interests include facial animation and AI-based Web presentations.

Fax - a facial animation system - was released into the public domain in 1992 and has been used by many researchers and has "starred" in a few films. The package was subsequently updated to include realistic hair.

Current research by the CAN is concentrating on the use of expert help/knowledge via "chatterbots" in an educational environment . This

will hopefully benefit students as they progress through their university course.

An FAQBOT has been developed which uses the facial animation and software agent expertise to produce a Web-based talking head for online presentations. This work has evolved into the MetaFace project.
